Across The Hall releases this Friday!

In 2006, director Alex Merkin embarked on creating a short film from a skeleton of a story idea that had come to him a year earlier. The film entitled “Across The Hall” starred Adrian Grenier (Entourage) and went on to win over 15 awards at 20 festivals including Best Short Film and Best Editing at Chicago Indiefest, Best Short Film at Red Bank Film Festival, Down Beach Film Festival, Harlem International Film Festival, ‘Best of Fest’ Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Spirit of Independents Award at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Before the whirlwind touring and media cavalcade had even begun to die down, Merkin had been approached with multiple offers to turn the short into a feature. Although Merkin was looking to take a break from “Across the Hall” and delve into new projects that he already had lined up the opportunity to embark upon his first feature grew larger.

Before Merkin knew it he was in pre-production, and like many independent film makers, faced with a multitude of obstacles including a very low budget and a daunting shooting schedule of only 17 days.

The feature cast Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, Poseidon) and Danny Pino (Cold Case, Flicka) in the lead roles, real-life friends eager to work both with one another as well as with Merkin on his debut feature. Celebrated actress Brittany Murphy (Sin City, Clueless, 8 Mile, Happy Feet) was tapped to portray June, the classic femme fatale.

Merkin is already receiving countless accolades for his directorial work; he has been asked to be included Lauren Lawrence’s new book Haute Dreams. Merkin is currently focusing on his new company where he has already begun work on a television pilot, documentaries and narrative feature. Merkin is the next filmmaker to keep your eyes on.

Across the Hall opens this Friday, October 30th in select cities nationwide including:

Deadlines for Entries?

A lot of you have been asking about deadlines for our screening series. We wanted to take the time now to inform you that there is, in fact, no set deadline. The series will take place once a month. So we work on a rolling submission basis. Although, once we start announcing who our “established filmmaker” guests are, we recommend you send your submissions in at least a month before the event if you are looking to screen with a specific guest. Also, please note if in particular you would like to screen for a certain month, we will surely take that into account.

Juxtapose Screening Series: Open to Submissions!

We are now accepting all submissions for short films to screen at the Juxtapose Screening Series in New York. Check out our submissions page to find out more information on how to submit your films. If you have any questions, email us at info@juxtaposefilm.com.

Also, we will be announcing our board of directors shortly. Our first few screenings will be announced by September 1st.
